How Big Is a 6×4 Shed, Really?
Many people underestimate the size until they see one in person. Think of a small bathroom and you are close. You can stand inside comfortably, reach both side walls without stretching, and move around without feeling cramped.

That is enough room for garden hand tools, a compact lawnmower, bags of compost, plant pots, a folding bike, and a shelf unit. It will not fit a workbench and a ride-on mower, but for everyday garden storage it does the job well.
Apex or Pent Roof?
The two main roof styles at this size are apex and pent.
An apex roof has the classic ridge down the middle, with two slopes running down each side. It gives you a little extra height in the centre, sheds rain well, and suits most garden styles. Our standard apex shed is a popular choice for exactly this reason.
A pent roof is a single slope, higher at the front and lower at the back. It gives more consistent headroom across the full depth and sits neatly against a fence or wall. It also tends to suit more modern gardens.
For most compact spaces, either works well. It comes down to where the shed is going and what looks right.
Do You Need Planning Permission?
In most cases, no. A 6×4 shed comfortably falls within permitted development limits. The main rules to know are that it must not sit forward of your house, must not cover more than 50% of your garden, and if it is within two metres of a boundary, the eaves must be no higher than 2.5 metres. Getting the Most Out of a Small Shed
A few simple habits make a big difference. Fix hooks and pegboards to the walls to keep floor space clear. Choose a shed with double doors if you plan to store a bike or mower. And treat the timber once a year to protect it from damp and rot.
