Sizes
The sizes on this website are the EXTERNAL FRAME SIZE of the building. The thickness of the cladding should be added to get the maximum overall size of the building excluding any roof overhang. We are very happy to make all of our buildings to any size. Please do not hesitate to ask if you would like a bespoke size.
Treatment
To stabilise the timber and maintain the appearance of your building, a quality preservation should be applied.
We use Barrettine 'Nourish & Protect' Wood Preservers and Wood Protective treatments, which are top quality oil based products available in a range of colours and designed to maximise protection and minimise maintenance.
Poulton Portables will apply 1 coat of Barrettine Wood Preserver. If clients require a 'top coat' Wood Protector, we ask to be advised when an order is placed (P.O.A)
We treat all exterior sides of our buildings, including bargeboards, finials and the front underside of any extended roof overhang only. Standard side and rear roof overhangs are not painted, neither is the underside of the floor, which incorporates pressure treated floor joists that do not need re-treating.
Clients are advised that white lines will occur due to 'weathering' or board movement; this is quite normal and when subsequent coats are applied all areas will look the same. Knots & the grain of timber will still be visible. All hinges etc. will be coated with stain preserver for added protection, unless we are advised otherwise by the customer upon placement of order.
External doors are treated on both sides.
If you wish to take your building with no treatment please advise us at the time of ordering.
Erecting your building
Erecting your own building is not difficult given reasonable DIY skills, a few basic tools, an extra pair of hands and a few hours to spare. When Poultons are erecting a building at the customer’s request, it is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that the proposed site is clear, flat, and of a firm level nature. Where it is necessary for our staff to carry out any site preparation we reserve the right to make an additional charge in accordance with the time taken and any materials used.
To maximise the life of any building it is important that it is kept clear of the ground and any surface water or dampness. Concrete slabs and/or pressure treated timber posts provide an economical solution provided they are firm, level and square. Wooden pressure treated bearers are probably most popular due to their ease of laying. One bearer should be laid at each end of the building across the run of the floor joists and the others equally spaced between, ensuring that each bearer is level with the next. The floors of our buildings are made so that the joists run in the longest direction. The bearers are always set across the run of the joists. 75mm×75mm bearers are adequate in most cases.
All dimensions quoted on this website are approximate only and nominal before machining in the case of framing and cladding etc.
Metric or Imperial
We have used metric sizes on the website as all timber is now supplied in metric lengths. However, if you prefer, please do not hesitate to ask for your building size in ‘feet and inches’. To help, we have below a table of conversion that we use.
6’ = 1.8m 7’ = 2.1m 8’ = 2.4m 9’ = 2.7m 10’ = 3.0m 11’ = 3.3m 12’ = 3.6m 13’ = 3.9m 14’ = 4.2m 15’ = 4.5m 16’ = 4.8m 17’ = 5.1m 18’ = 5.4m 19’ = 5.7m 20’ = 6.0m
We reserve the right to alter the specification of any building without notice provided that the basic character of the building is not affected.
